29 PALMS MARINE CORPS BAND CONCERT IN SONOMA (DURING OCTOBER 2005):
On Saturday, October 8th a free concert took place at the Grinstead Amphitheater in the Sonoma Plaza by the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Band from Twentynine Palms.
The band was in the Bay Area for Fleet Week activities and it appeared in Sonoma at the special request of Major General Mike Myatt, USMC (Retired) who owns a home in Sonoma. Retired Marine Colonel Bucky Peterson, another local resident, was the Master of Ceremonies.
An estimated 400 people listened as the band (handsomely uniformed in their Dress Blues) perform some of the best-loved Sousa Marches and other popular melodies for the better part of an hour. It was good to see an audience full of veterans, many of them Marines.
After the concert, Fred Unsworth, a Marine veteran and local resident, arranged for the band to visit Buena Vista Winery for lunch where they played jazz and blues tunes for the guests of the Winery.
Although the Marines’ Memorial Association in San Francisco sponsored the concert, many local residents helped make this event possible. Wendy Peterson and the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau provided the overall coordination with additional support from the Wine Country Marines. Doug McKesson, a Marine veteran and member of the Sonoma City Council helped with logistics. Bill Lynch, a former Navy Officer, generously provided promotional and public relations support via the Sonoma Index-Tribune. This was truly a joint Navy-Marine Corps operation and it was executed flawlessly.

GENERAL ZINNI'S VISIT TO SONOMA (DURING MARCH 2005):
On March 24, 2005 General Anthony Zinni gave an inspirational talk regarding “The Future of the Middle East” at the Lodge at Sonoma.
General Zinni is a very high-profile retired Marine Corps four-star general who is will-known internationally as a “warrior diplomat.” He served as the commander in chief of the U. S. central Command for three years before turning over command to Army General Tommy Frank in September 2000. He is also the co-author of the best-selling book “Battle Ready” with Tom Clancy.
The Sonoma Valley doesn’t often have people of General Zinni’s caliber stopping by to speak with a local group of citizens on a typical Thursday afternoon. This was a rare exception. True to everyone’s expectations, General Zinni was both highly intellectual and entertaining speaker. He was also refreshingly optimistic and encouraging regarding the future of the Middle East.
This was a wonderful event and the type of enlightening and stimulating experience that should take place more often in the Sonoma Valley. The room was packed by many of Sonoma’s business leaders and citizens. The audience also included numerous local veterans, many of them Marines. Major General Mike Myatt, USMC (Retired) was among the distinguished guests.
General Zinnin’s talk was sponsored by a local group called SPIN (Sonoma Political Information Network). The event was largely made possible by the efforts of local resident Colonel Bucky Peterson, USMC (Retired).
The day before his visited Sonoma, General Zinni gave the same speech at the Marines’ Memorial Club and Hotel in San Francisco. A transcript of this speech appears at the Marines' Memorial Association Web site: www.MarineClub.com
